Subject..Swatow Situation.

On 7th July, H.M.Oonal and myself visited

General Hsieh, We were well received and were given the

usual ineffective assurances.

Te protested against

(1)

Chinese Merchant Orows being forcibly detained.

(ii) Violation of Tientsin Treaty in cutting off

supplies to "Binebell", and

(iii) Stoning of "Bluebell's" working party - polias

and soldiers failing to protect them, etc.

Most of these crews now seem to have left Swator.

Vague assurances that these matters would be seen

to were given.

All offers of co-operation for defending properties were courteously refused on the grounds that there was no necessity for such a step; requests for soldier guards on properties were noted but have not yet

heard of any being placed.

3. Ship's Motor Boat has become wholly impossible to run and a larger and more seaworthy craft has been leat the ship by Jarlines.

4. The Officers remaining onboard the crewless ships are still permitted fresh food from shore under the strict supervision of the strike ommittes.

The 0.0. of "Saormento" was asked by the

Strikers' Committee to give a written assurance that such
